We know that adventure based outdoor programmes for young people need to be engaging, relevant, easily understood, safe and supported.

We will aim to support the unique goals, values and requirements of your organisation and its students/clients, and believe that this is best achieved through an individually tailored programme.

Our aim at Horizons is to guide and support individuals and groups through experiential activities and outdoor adventure to promote personal growth and self-discovery. We create a safe and supportive environment for challenging and novel experiences that push them outside their comfort zones. Through activities such as rock climbing, hiking, team building exercise and problem-solving tasks, participants are encouraged to confront fears, develop resilience, build trust, improve communication skills, and gain insight into their own strengths and limitations. The facilitator utilizes various techniques to help participants process their experiences, reflect on their emotions and thoughts, and make connection to their personal lives

We have extensive experience in providing outdoor adventure education programmes to schools, tertiary education and community organisations. These include:

School Camps
From single day to multiple weeks we can provide an outdoor experience for students of any age. Popular activities include adventure based learning activities, rock climbing, abseiling, caving, high a low ropes course, rafting building and overnight tramps. We operate in a range of locations throughout Canterbury. We can either organise and deliver your entire school camp or visit to lead specific activities - its up to you!

Our team of outdoor education instructors will facilitate your students through their camp experience to make it enjoyable, educational and safe.

Team Development
A popular way to help students find their place in a new group or to aid the transition to senior school. Through carefully sequenced activities and timely reviews Horizons team building programmes can be delivered at your school or at one of many outdoor locations around Christchurch. These short programmes (1 or 2 days) can really help young people learn to interact positively others and develop the traits of a successful team.

“It really helped me to be in a team and help others and myself. It really pushed me to my limits and gave me confidence that I didn’t have before … now I know I can do anything I put my mind to” – student comment

Leadership Programmes
Give your students the opportunity to put theory into practice through a range of leadership activities. Students will learn about different leadership styles and techniques before being given the opportunity to lead an activity and receive peer and facilitator feedback. These programmes provide an ideal opportunity to develop student leaders and to build their understanding of, and strategies for, effective leadership.

International Student Programmes
Share the Kiwi outdoor adventure spirit with your international students. Single or multi day programmes can be organised to suit your student’s adventure or tourism preferences. These all inclusive programmes are popular during exam time, giving school staff the time to focus on end of year preparations. Horizons Outdoor education team will give your international students the opportunity to step into some new environments and challenge themselves.
